Luxembourg is a small country located in Northwestern Europe. Its name derives from Lucilinburhuc, the Saxon name given to the original fortress in the area. The coat of arms dates to the early medieval period and is based on that of the Duchy of Limburg, a province of the Holy Roman Empire now located in Belgium. Throughout its long and storied history, Luxembourg has been under the direct rule of many nations. It was initially occupied by the two Belgic tribes Treveri and Mediomatrici, from about 450 BCE to 53 BCE, when the Romans took it over. From there it passed into the Frankish Holy Roman Empire, then a long period of independent prosperity, before falling into the hands of the Spanish Hapsburgs, then the Austrian Habsburgs, then the French, and ultimately the Prussians before its independence was finalized on May 11, 1867.
